Who are Jacob and Jordan?
Such a good question (is it really?) who are Jacob and Jordan? Well I'm Jordan so I guess I'll introduce myself first and then I'll let Jacob finish this off.
I'm obviously not going to run you through the whole spiel from the get go to now. But the relevant part to you all is that for my undergrad science degree I studied food and nutrition. In my final semester I had to undertake a research project, I was already making my own kefir and so I chose kefir to be the subject of that research project. For part of that research I had to decipher the differences between authentic (or home-made/traditional) kefir and commercial (store-bought) kefir. I was honestly shocked with how crook commercial kefir was compared to traditional kefir. I then had to gather a small population of people (my friends) to do a blind sampling of commercial kefir and my homemade stuff. This part isn't really important but this is where the idea for Kickass Kefir was born.
Fast forward into my master's degree (neuroscience) and I was spending a large portion of my days reading about brains and the enteric nervous system (gut brain axis). I started research about kefir and found some really cool and interesting research about probiotics, kefir, the gut, and our brains. I still like to read this stuff and in future blogs on this website I'll be doing more detailed write-ups of what I've learned.
Rewind just slightly to (I think) about a year into my undergrad degree. I was so fascinated with everything related to food and health and kefir came into my line of sight. My uncle was a huge proponent of kefir, he'd been making it for years and even made his children (my cousins) drink a kefir smoothie everyday before school, and got me on the train. He gave me some grains (about 7-8 years ago from time of writing) and the rest is history.
I'm a lucky person in the sense that I wasn't someone who was having specific gut issues or health concerns before I found kefir, so I can't say that this is the perfect food that cured me. I do love the stuff and I can't imagine my life without it. Subjectively, I can say that I have never had any gut issues, I rarely (if ever) get sick, my skin is great (for someone who does quite literally nothing to it), and I'd like to think my brain is healthy. Even if this business goes under I'm going to continue drinking kefir until my final days.
Hello Jacob here. Big Fan of Jordan, kefir, and the kickass combination. I’m here in support of the mission which is to support the brains and bellies of all Australians. I’ve had my own relationship with belly (born with hirschsprung’s & enterocolitis) and brain (hematoma from a sporting accident) issues, and while I don’t think kefir will cure these things (TBD), we hope the product and brand empowers all Australians to kickass in whatever it is they want to kickass at.
We believe cracking open a fresh batch of traditionally brewed kefir is one hell of a start. Goats milk is my favourite…
Don’t forget to check out some of the emerging research on how traditional kefir is kicking the ass of conditions like IBS, ADHD, and more.
